The Midway High School UIL Unified Track and Field Team once again advanced to the highest level of competition.
Out of 10 teams at the regional meet, Midway placed in the top four to qualify for state.
"Each year has been more competitive than the previous year," Midway High School UIL Unified Track and Field Head Coach Jordyn Baugh said. "Knowing that the competition was going to be what it was, I made our practice schedule significantly more rigorous."
The team practiced every day after school, even on days they didn't have school.
"We have really risen to every occasion," Baugh said. "Both relay teams improved their time at every meet and we had PRs in individual events at every meet."
Unified Sports is a branch under Special Olympics that is designed to be more competitive in nature. Unified teams include special education athletes and general education partners training and competing together in the same events. The athletes are held to the exact same standards and rules as athletes in traditional UIL Track and Field meets.
"I don't know if they realize how big of a deal what they are doing is," Baugh said. "They are laying the foundation for UIL Unified sports at Midway High School and doing an incredible job at it."
Midway’s state-qualifying athletes and their partners competed in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 4x100 relay, long jump, and shot put:
