Midway High School and M Power powerlifting athletes competed in the 2024 Texas Special Olympics Winter Games in February, bringing home a total of 12 gold medals in squat, bench press, and deadlift from the state meet.

“These athletes trained hard for many weeks to learn proper lifting techniques and increase their strength and stamina,” Midway ISD Special Olympics Head Andra Speerbrecher said. “We are so proud of their hard work and determination.”
Additionally, at the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games, Midway athlete Philip Auchard was invited to light the Special Olympics torch as a representative of Area 12.
“We are just proud,” Midway ISD Special Populations Director Lisa Cochran said in a March update to the school board, “proud of these children, their heart, and the heart of the coaches and families that support these children.”
