Midway ISD's Board of Trustees approved the 2025-2026 academic calendar during its regular December board meeting Tuesday. The new calendar, which maintains many popular features from the current year, received strong support from district employees.
The calendar includes several key features that families should note:
- First day of school: August 14, 2025
- Last day of school: May 22, 2026
- Full week off for Thanksgiving (November 24-28)
- Two-week Winter Break (December 22-January 2)
- Spring Break: March 9-13, 2026
The approved calendar, known as "Draft A," was the clear favorite among district employees, receiving 54.5% of votes in a staff survey with over 400 participants.
"The calendar was designed to balance instructional needs while accommodating holiday preferences expressed by staff and the community," Midway ISD Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. Becky Odajima said.
Key improvements include a more balanced distribution of days between fall and spring semesters, with 82 days in the first semester and 88 in the second. The calendar also provides professional development days throughout the year to support teacher preparation and training.
New staff will begin orientation July 30-August 1, with professional staff returning August 4. The calendar includes built-in weather make-up days on April 6 and May 1, if needed.
The district developed the calendar based on feedback from various stakeholders, including staff, parents, and community members, through surveys and committee reviews. Priority was given to maintaining a full week for Thanksgiving break, providing two weeks for winter break, and ending the school year before Memorial Day, while also aligning with local college schedules.
