Midway Hosts Annual Substitute Appreciation Breakfast

Midway ISD hosted its annual Substitute Appreciation Breakfast at the start of November, recognizing the critical role substitutes play in supporting the district’s students and staff.

“It takes a special kind of person to sub,” Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen said. “There’s no way to put a value on the connection point and the impact you make on the trajectory of a young person’s life.”

The event included safety and security training for substitutes and provided an open forum for discussing ways to enhance their experience. Many substitutes expressed their gratitude for the district’s ongoing support.

“I retired from Midway and came back as a sub because of the Midway family,” substitute Ruth Wyrick shared. “I love the schools, district, staff, and especially the kids.”

Despite challenges across public education in maintaining substitute staffing, Midway ISD continues to prioritize building a robust pool. With over 200 substitutes currently available, the district is always looking for more to meet the growing need.

According to the Texas Association of School Boards, students spend approximately 8% of their educational journey with a substitute teacher.

“Our teachers couldn’t feel confident stepping away from the classroom when life happens if it wasn’t for substitutes,” Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Dr. Ashley Canuteson said.
