A Midway High School student is among the nation’s top scorers on the ACT test. Senior Jonathan Melichar recently earned the highest possible Composite score—a perfect 36—on his ACT.

Receiving a top score on the test is incredibly rare. For last year’s graduating class of 2023, less than 1% of over 1.3 million U.S. high school seniors who took the ACT earned a 36 and the average Composite score was 19.5.
The ACT is made up of four multiple-choice tests: English, reading, math, and science. Each test is scored from 1 to 36 and the Composite score is the average of the four test scores.
Students who achieve a 36 demonstrate a mastery of skills acquired throughout middle school and high school that are important for success in postsecondary education.
In addition to his perfect ACT score, Melichar is a National Merit Commended Student recognized for scoring among the top 3% in the nation on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
He is also a state competitor in UIL Science, a member of the National Honor Society, and an AP Scholar with Distinction for his outstanding performance on multiple AP Exams. After high school, Melichar plans to study computer engineering.
