Three projects from Midway High School advanced to compete in the Texas History Day state history fair in Austin after placing among the top two in their categories in the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair.
Gabriela Gonzalez Alanis, Hazel Davison, and Stella Davison from Midway High School won first place out of 60 contestants at the state level with their group exhibit: "From Dust to Dust: How the Dust Bowl Revolutionized Agriculture and Society."
This group will advance to nationals at the University of Maryland in June to compete against finalists from across the country.
“These girls all worked incredibly hard to build historical connections highlighting turning points in our history, Midway High School History Teacher and history fair sponsor Molly Sanders said. "They all exhibited high-level research skills and grew in their ability to defend a historical argument."
Midway High School students Dacey Dougherty and Celia Focarile also advanced to compete at state with their group exhibit: "Beyond the Plastic: The Impact of Barbie as an Empowering Symbol of Feminine Identity.”
Excelling in the individual performance category, Rachel Davenport won the senior division at the HOT Regional History Fair and took her project "The Treaty of Waitangi” to state as well.
"I’m so proud of all the work they did as well as their willingness to learn," Sanders said. "I know they have all learned important skills in this process and I cannot wait to continue watching them grow as students.”
